Time out for women

Who they are

In 1951, Benwerren was purchased to provide a place of nurture for exhausted women needing ‘time out’. Since 1978 it has officially been a place of refuge and support for women and children who have experienced trauma. Their experience has shown that, with this support, many families have found the strength to overcome terrifying circumstances.

What they do

Benwerren house

Set in picturesque Yarra Junction, Benwerren gives access to short term accommodation in a peaceful, nurturing environment for women who need a break or refuge so they can rest and be cared for.

Benwerren aims to minister to the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual well-being of those that stay.

Welfare, legal and medical help are sought if required. Follow up service is also provided to offer continued support and friendship to women who leave their care.

Holiday programs, girls only weekends and boys weekends provide fun and support for families who have stayed at Benwerren.

What has been achieved with SCF

Employment of a staff member who is a mentor to guests coming to stay. This provides much needed support to the women, many of whom have experienced significant trauma. Click for Brooke’s story.

Upgrade of the kitchen facilities to improve meals for healthy living, nutrition and the social time spent around the meal table.

Sponsorship of ten children, who have stayed at Benwerren, to attend a co-curricular sporting or musical programs.

A contribution towards the purchase of the house and land that forms this fabulous sanctuary for women and children who are in dire distress and need of support.

Future Goals

Benwerren management are currently determining options for further projects. The possibilities to continue the support from SCF are exciting and we are working closely with Benwerren staff.  Check our Facebook page and newsletter for updates!
